Cameron Highlands, in Pahang, has three main towns3: Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang1. This page compares Tanah Rata and Brinchang for a cheap stay, with listed bed prices and the charges added on top.

Side by side: Tanah Rata or Brinchang

Tanah Rata is the easier base on a tight budget, because public buses run from Tapah to Tanah Rata3. Brinchang trades the bus at your door for a compact town centre full of cheap hotels.

Tanah Rata

The main commercial and tourist town, and a backpacker favourite

  • Backpacker inns and hotels at a range of prices
  • Public buses from Tapah run here
  • Dorm beds listed from RM12

Brinchang

The highest of the three towns, built around a shophouse centre

  • Restaurants, stores and budget hotels in one tight cluster
  • Tourist bus fares about RM2–5, by distance
  • Nights in the highlands can drop to 12 °C

If you want walkable cafés and the bus station close by, look at a base in Tanah Rata. If you want to eat and sleep in the same few streets, Brinchang’s shophouse centre fits.

What that means for you:

  • Malaysians: no tourism tax at any hotel5.
  • Homestays, kampung (village) stays and places with fewer than five rooms don’t charge tourism tax5.
  • Hotels add these at the desk, so your booking-site total may be lower than what you pay.

Everyday costs once you’re there

  • Banana leaf rice at Restoran Kumar in Tanah Rata: RM71.
  • Breakfast at Yong Teng Cafe: RM6–101.

For afternoon tea, the Hillview Inn at No.17 Jalan Mentigi, Tanah Rata1 has a café serving hot snacks, tea and scones. Compare more Cameron Highlands scone prices and shops before you settle on one. If dinner means hotpot, check steamboat prices in Cameron Highlands first.

Which suits whom

Your transport and your sleeping style decide it more than the room rate does.

  • you want the widest spread: the town has backpacker inns and hotels at a range of prices7.

Choose Brinchang if

  • you’d rather pay for a private room than share a dorm;
  • you want to stay in the highest of the three towns3;
  • you don’t mind a tourist bus or taxi ride to catch your bus out of Tanah Rata.
