The local packages cover much the same ground: Wikivoyage finds them very similar in content and price4. So your real choice is length, start time, shared or private, and where you get picked up.

Several operators have offices on or near the main road in Tanah Rata4, if you’d rather book in person once you arrive.

Types of trip

Cameron Highlands tours split into short trips from the highland towns and long day trips from Kuala Lumpur. Discover Camerons runs most of its tours in 4x4 Land Rover-type vehicles3.

Shared prices are per person. Private prices are one fare for the whole group, of up to 8 people3.

Which tour fits you

  • First visit, one free morning: a half-day Land Rover trip. Oastel’s covers the Mossy Forest boardwalk, the BOH Sungei Palas tea plantation and Raju’s Hill Strawberry Farm5 in one go.
  • Early risers and photographers: a sunrise tour, which Discover Camerons runs over about 5 hours3.
  • Families and small groups: a private tour. Discover Camerons’ Easy N Go is RM350 for up to 8 people3, one price for the whole car.
  • Staying in KL with no night to spare: a day tour from Kuala Lumpur (see below).
  • Happy to plan it yourself: Wikivoyage says most of what a tour includes can be done independently4. Start with the things to do in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia and go at your own pace.

Most operators also list night tours, but they’re not popular4. And expect company at the top of Gunung Brinchang (2,032 m6): it’s on most of the popular tours4.

Can you tour Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur?

Yes: day tours from Kuala Lumpur run about 12 hours, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM1. That’s because Cameron Highlands is roughly 200 km7 north of the city.

Exotic Asia Holidays’ private day tour stops at Lata Iskandar Waterfall and Bharat Tea Plantation1, among other places. Its price covers a private air-conditioned car, a driver-guide, the buggy ride and Butterfly Garden and Lavender Garden entry1.

A day trip leaves little time on the plateau. If you can spare a night, compare the KL to Cameron Highlands transport costs, pick from the recommended hotels in Cameron Highlands and follow one of the day-by-day Cameron Highlands itineraries.

Price ladder: tours from cheapest to priciest

Adult prices per person, from each operator's own site. Private group fares are in the table of trip types above.

What tour prices leave out

Tour prices mostly pay for the vehicle and the guide, not for what you spend at each stop. Budget for these on top:

  • Entrance fees: on Oastel’s trip they’re not included and paid in cash on site2, so bring cash.
  • Meals and drinks: at your own expense2 on Oastel’s trip. Exotic Asia Holidays’ KL tour doesn’t include lunch, personal expenses or travel insurance1.
  • Strawberry picking: optional, and paid directly to the farm2.
  • Insurance: Discover Camerons’ prices leave out meals, entrance fees and insurance3.
  • Transport off the route: Discover Camerons’ tour transport runs only between Tanah Rata and Kea Farm3.

The Mossy Forest boardwalk is the stop most half-day tours charge you for at the gate. Here’s what it costs; there’s more on the Mossy Forest entry and boardwalk page.

Cancellation and pickup rules

Cancellation rules are strict and short on refunds, so check them before you pay. This is how the operators’ own terms compare:

Operator Cancellation Pickup
Oastel
Request at least 24 hours before the start; 95% refunded after a 5% fee9
Free from hotels in Tanah Rata, Golden Hills, Brinchang and Kea Farm2
Discover Camerons
No cancellations or refunds within 5 days of the tour3
Tanah Rata to Kea Farm only3
Exotic Asia Holidays
Full refund at least 48 hours before1
Within 5 km of the Petronas Twin Towers1
MyTourLane
Not stated
KL City Centre only8

A few habits that save trouble:

  • Be in the lobby or at the pickup point at least 5 minutes9 before the time Oastel gives you.
  • Skip Mondays if your tour stops at BOH: its tea gardens are closed on Mondays, except school and public holidays10.
  • Book ahead for November to January10, which BOH Tea calls the high season. It names June and September10 as quieter months.
  • Morning and afternoon departures are very popular4, so reserve a day or two before you want to go.
  • Pack a layer for sunrise tours: nights can drop to 12 °C4.
