When to go

BOH Tea calls Cameron Highlands a year-round destination2, and the climate backs that up. Your real choice is between the drier-feeling months, the quieter months and the busy ones.

Cameron Highlands sits at about 1,500 m in Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia1, which keeps it cool while the lowlands swelter. Rain is spread evenly through the year3, and when it comes, it comes down heavily1.

Best months for weather and crowds
  • BOH Tea's best months February to April
  • Showers or peak crowds May to January

Best months for what you want to do

  • Best weather: February to April2, the months BOH Tea rates best.
  • Fewer crowds: June and September2 are off-peak. They fall in the monsoon, but the rain is often short-lived and mostly late in the afternoon2.
  • Tea plantations: go early in the morning2, in any season. A sunrise and Mossy Forest tour gets you out at that hour.
  • Trekking: pick a dry spell, because the main hiking risk is rain and the state of the trails after heavy rain1.
  • Trail running: the Cameron Ultra Trail (Cultra) ran on 18–19 July 20264, with five categories from 4 km to 100 km5.
  • Night market: Brinchang’s night market opens on Friday and Saturday nights, and every day in holiday season1.

Months to avoid, and why

Skip the peak periods if you don’t like queues and traffic:

  • November to January: the high season is one of the busiest times, as the cool weather draws both local and international visitors2. Book ahead2.
  • School holidays: Pahang’s school breaks are in the month table below.
  • Long weekends: holiday crowds have left some drivers taking up to four hours for trips that usually take under 20 minutes10.

That jam ran from the Simpang Pulai and Tapah10 roads up into the highlands. If you’re coming on a holiday weekend, leave early and compare the bus and train options from Kuala Lumpur.

For the busy months, sort out your Cameron Highland hotel well before you travel. Off-peak, it’s easier to find cheap places to stay.
