Where Tanah Rata sits

Tanah Rata is the main commercial and tourist town of Cameron Highlands and the largest3 of its three main towns1. Ringlet, where the roads from Raub and Tapah meet, is 6 km1 away. Brinchang, the highest of the three1, is about 4 km2 on.

The distances to plan around:

  • Height: the highlands sit at about 1,500 m (5,000 ft)2, the highest point in Malaysia you can reach by road.
  • From Ipoh: about 852 to 90 km4.
  • From Kuala Lumpur: about 200 km4.

What’s in town: services, walks and tea

Most of the highlands’ everyday services are right here in town:

  • A hospital, police station and post office5
  • Banks, shops and eateries5
  • A bus station and a taxi station3

The town is also the starting point for Gunung Beremban, the Bharat tea plantations and most of the numbered hiking trails2. Walks you can start on foot:

  • Robinson Falls: a short distance from town2.
  • Parit Waterfall: Trail 4 is an easy walk there, starting near the Forestry Department2. Wikivoyage warns the view is poor because the river is full of rubbish2.
  • Gunung Jasar: Trail 10 is a day hike through ancient mossy forest, about 1½ hours2 to the peak.
  • Gunung Beremban: Wikivoyage spells it Berembun and says the summit (1,840 m2) is overgrown, with little view over the valley.

For tea, BOH Tea and Bharat Tea1 are the plantations best set up for visitors, and Bharat’s fields are among the walks that start from town.

What’s the weather like in Tanah Rata?

Cool and often wet: the mean annual temperature is 18 °C, and it rains often, and heavily when it does2. Days seldom go above 25 °C and nights can drop as low as 12 °C2, so pack a warm layer and a rain jacket.

It’s getting warmer, though. In December 2025 the president of the group Reach told Utusan Malaysia the average temperature had risen from 20 °C to 24 °C6.

Where to stay: from dorm beds to Tudor hotels

The town has backpacker inns and hotels at a range of prices3, from dorm beds to Tudor-style hotels on the hill. These listings show the spread:

  • Kang Traveller's Lodge · Dorm bed to private room RM12–120
  • Twin Pines · Attic single to private room RM15–75
  • Cameronian Inn · Dorm bed to private double RM15–50
  • Father's Guest House · Dorm bed to double RM30–74.20
  • Bala's Holiday Chalet · Cottage room to suite RM120–380
  • Heritage Hotel · Superior rooms from RM350
  • Strawberry Park Resort · Studio apartment to penthouse RM350–1,050
  • Smokehouse Hotel · Plus service charge RM480–600

Wikivoyage listings, several years old; rates per night in RM, so check current prices before booking.

What the price scale doesn’t tell you:

  • Smokehouse Hotel: an English Tudor-style hotel with a colonial feel, built in 19392.
  • Heritage Hotel: the hotel calls itself a 238-room Tudor-style hotel on a hill, and says the town centre is an eight-minute walk7 away.
  • Cameronian Inn: a cottage on Jalan Mentigi with a garden, serving afternoon tea and strawberry scones2.
  • Bala’s Holiday Chalet: within walking distance of town2.
  • RiverView Bungalow: Swiss-Garden puts it in the heart of town8.
