What you can do at Sungai Palas

The BOH Tea Plantation at Sungai Palas (BOH spells it Sungei Palas) is a working tea garden with a visitor centre and café that BOH built in 20073. Here’s what’s on site:

  • Tea factory tours that show how BOH makes its teas. BOH says the factory tours are open1.
  • Tea tasting sessions that teach you how to appreciate tea3.
  • The BOH Café, serving BOH teas with light bites and confectionery3. Its J.A.’s Balcony is a 20-foot1 overhang that doubles as a viewing deck over the tea fields.
  • Tristan’s Terrace, the newer café section, which seats 200 people3 and looks out over the plantation.
  • An exhibition area on BOH’s history and the art of perfecting tea1.
  • The gift shop, for BOH tea souvenirs3.
  • Photo spots against the tea fields, plus a hill on the plantation whose climb is worth it for the view4, according to Wikivoyage.

How do you get to the BOH Tea Plantation from Brinchang?

From Brinchang, follow the main road towards Kampung Raja, turn left onto the narrow hill road after the Equatorial Hotel4 and follow the signs.

  1. Leave Brinchang towards Kampung Raja

Follow the main road out of Brinchang towards Kampung Raja.

  2. Turn left after the Equatorial Hotel

Take the narrow hill road on the left just after the Equatorial Hotel.

  3. Follow the signs uphill

Follow the signs up the hill road, which is very narrow in places.

  4. Reach the tea centre

The estate sits just off Jalan Gunung Brinchang (Federal Route 432), a main route to Sungai Palas.

For a sense of distance, KAYAK puts Wan Alyasa Hotel in Brinchang 2.6 km7 from the plantation.

Getting there without a car

BOH itself says spots such as the tea plantations need transport1, so sort out how you’ll get up the hill before you set off. Your options:

  • Taxi: available, but BOH warns taxis can be expensive because of the hilly terrain1.
  • Oastel’s half-day Land Rover trip: Oastel says it visits the Mossy Forest boardwalk, the BOH Sungei Palas tea plantation and tea centre, and Raju’s Hill Strawberry Farm8.
  • Discover Camerons’ half-day tour: the company says it takes in the Boh tea plantation, the Mossy Forest/Mount Brinchang and a strawberry farm9.

Prefer to book online before you arrive? Klook sells a half-day tour that pairs the Mossy Forest with a tea plantation. Its title doesn’t name the estate, so check the itinerary for Sungai Palas before you pay.

Other tea gardens to compare

Sungai Palas isn’t BOH’s biggest garden. BOH says its Habu garden is its largest and oldest, at over 465 hectares1, and keeps the same hours: 8.30am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday10.

Tourism Pahang names BOH Tea and Bharat Tea11 as the tea plantations best developed for visitors. Bharat sells its tea as Cameron Valley.

Who owns BOH, and is its tea grown here?

BOH belongs to BOH Plantations Sdn Bhd12, and yes, it grows tea here: the Sungai Palas garden’s address is 39100 Brinchang, Cameron Highlands1. The company in brief:

  • Founded: in 1929 by J. A. Russell, a British-born businessman13.
  • Run by: Caroline Russell13, whom Wikipedia lists as CEO and executive chair.
  • Size: Wikipedia calls BOH the largest black tea manufacturer in Malaysia13.
  • Sungai Palas: bought in the 1950s, after BOH’s then chairman, Tristan Russell3, saw its potential.

Nearby stops to pair with it

The estate sits just off the road to Gunung Brinchang1, and Brinchang is the starting point for Gunung Brinchang, the Boh tea plantations and many farms4. These fit into the same outing:
